Since the conversion from acid to alkaline papermaking began, alkaline sizing has seen several trends. These trends were caused by the limitations and benefits of the available sizing chemistries, alkyl- ketene dimers (AKD) or alkenyl succinic anhydrides (ASA), as well as advances in ASA sizing chemistry. These advancements have eventually led to changes in sizing philosophy.
