This article reviews the critical quality attributes that a gas utility operator should expect from a supplier of a high quality polyethylene gas pipe. These include: 1) selection of a superior polyethylene (PE) material, 2) 100% 360-degree wall thickness monitoring, 3) barcode marking for tracking and traceability (DIMP), and 4) ISO 9001 certified quality management system. A case study will demonstrate the impact of resin selection on the projected field performance of PE 2708 gas pipe under various conditions, including those where pipe damage from storage, handling and installation or third-party damage may exist.
