A legislation affecting the environment has grown to also encompass noise levels, so has the need to i reduce the level of noise created by high speed rotating equipment. Turbocompressors are a high noise source, typically 94 dBA or more. Both design engineers and operators are required by legislation to reduce this noise pollution, particularly for clients who have installations in urban areas or in areas with specific noise restrictions. An acoustical system consists of three parts: the noise source, the propagation paths and the receiver. As such, noise reduction can be addressed three different ways: (1) reducing the strength of the noise at its source; (2) minimizing the transmission paths (e.g., covering the noisy structure with a blanket or enclosure); and (3) interrupting or minimizing the noise before it reaches the receiver (e.g., wearing ear plugs). Reducing noise at the source is the preferred solution. A compressor can produce a great amount of acoustic energy, or noise.
