La Valley Industries has published a brochure devoted to the Deckhand~R pipe-handling attachment that is said to require no ground personnel during pipe handling. The equipment is offered to the HDD and the pipeline industries. Deckhand was created to reduce operating costs, improvernjobsite safety and increase overall productivity. The 3,000-1b. Deckhand can handle pipe diameters up to 9 inches with the standard arm and up to 24 inches with the optional arm. The unit is connected to the site where an excavator bucket has been removed. It is controlled by switches mounted on the excavator joysticks and does not need workers in the pipe-handling zone on the ground.
