Although LNG has been around for decades, it has never formed a very significant part of the North American gas industry's portfolio of supplies. Now, however, the U.S. is poised to expand its involvement in LNG markets, with 11 Bcf/d of import terminal capacity under construction that will triple U.S. LNG receiving and regasification capacity by year-end 2009. Even at today's relatively low volumes, the U.S. is already a significant potential player in the global LNG market. The simple truth is that LNG is now often competitive with domestic production - a fact that was not true a decade ago, and hence North America will be able to attract supplies once near-term supply bottlenecks are relieved.
