In recent years, oil and natural gas pipelines continued to become ever-more dependent on advanced technology to improve operational safety and efficiency, both of which eventually lead to greater profitability. Although it is not really a new technology, one of the key instruments in the pipeline industry's quest is the continued progress of geographical information systems, better known as GIS.rnThe Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA), a professional organization and leading advocate for GIS use among utilities, will, weather permitting, hold its increasingly popular GIS for Oil & Gas Conference Sept. 13-17 at the Marriott Westchase Hotel in Houston. Last year's conference and exhibition had to be canceled because of the aftermath from Hurricane Ike.rnRex Schrunk is the 2009 Oil & Gas Conference Chair and discussed his expectations for the conference. Schrunk is Chief Engineer, Kansas City Operations, for Willbros Engineers, LLC.
