During the recent hurricane season, it has become even more urgent for the U.S. to build an LNG import infrastructure. The loss of 80% of offshore Gulf of Mexico natural gas production capacity in September and October 2005 drove home the realization that domestic gas production is insufficient to power the economy and, the residential demand for electricity. There is virtually no spare capacity, and now, the gas storage reservoirs have not been charged up sufficiently for the coming winter heating season. Gas prices have tripled to $ 12-13 per Mcf, a price which was unimaginable a few years ago. That provides a powerful incentive to bring LNG to these shores.
