The Langeled Pipeline is to be the world's longest and deepest subsea trunkline. It is the trunkline that will export gas from the Ormen Lange field, then on shore to Nyhamma in Norway and exported via the Sleipner platform to Easington in the UK. "Ormen Lange" originally referred to a 60-oarsman Viking ship with a head at the bow, celebrated in Norwegian sagas, and with a meaning like "long snake" it provides the ideal starting point for this giant pipeline. Construction of the trunkline started in March 2005, with completion due late 2006. Once on stream, Ormen Lange will supply 70 million m3/day of gas to the UK market, meeting up to one-fifth of its current gas demand.
