Energy companies have always paid attention to weather conditions, though probably never to the extent that they do now, thanks to last year's record hurricane season that devastated much of the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf Coast region. Much of the offshore oil and gas production is still shut in as overwhelmed work crews struggle to repair the enormous damages inflicted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita on production rigs and platforms and to a lesser extent, transmission lines. That doesn't even begin to include the damages to refineries, processing facilities and pipelines onshore.
