The operation of a reciprocating com-pressor is closely linked to the per-formance of its valves in terms of both life and efficiency. These compressors traditionally have used passive valves to control the suction and discharge flow process of the compressor cylinder. However, valve failures are generally cited as the most common cause of scheduled and unscheduled compressor outages, and the replacement and repair of valves is the single largest maintenance cost item.
