One of the more impressive international projects in recent years has been the 225-km natural gas pipeline and associated power plant that was developed for the East African nation of Tanzania. The pipeline comes some 30 years after a major natural gas reservoir was discovered off the southern coast of Tanzania around Songo Songo, a small fishing island in the Indian Ocean. The pipeline connects the reserves to the power plant located farther north. The area has historically depended on hydro-electricity and fuel oil for its power generation, so the switch to natural gas is important from both an economic and environmental standpoint. The project was developed and is operated by Songas Limited, the majority owner of which is Globeleq, an operating power company targeting Africa, Latin America and Asia.
