The successful installation of seven horizontal directionally drilled (HDD) crossings has demonstrated the growing variety of demands contractors face in the installation of high-pressure natural gas pipelines. The crossings were completed during the installation of the HubLine natural gas pipeline near Boston last November The pipeline was built to interconnect the 650-mile Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline with the 1,000-mile Algonquin system to transport significant volumes of high-pressure natural gas to the Northeast where demand continues to increase Gas began to flow in the HubLine pipeline last November, shortly after some of the most challenging HDD installations industry has faced were completed. In September, Michels Directional Crossings, a division of Michels Corporation of Brownsville, WI finished the last of seven 30-inch HDD crossings. The work included three conventional river crossings, two landfalls and two novel water-to-water installations.
