Halliburton Pipeline and Process Sendees has sourced and developed a real-time remote subsea pressure monitoring system that saves on contract vessel rental and other costs by employing acoustic telemetry technology to track pig progress in deep-water flowlines undergoing installation and pre-commissioning. Halliburton's Hal-AT~(TM) acoustic telemetry system consists of the following main components: 1. Transponder unit (Compat), 2. Suhsea pressure transmitter , 3. Receiver unit (LCU), 4. Communications and data logging software. The transponder is deployable to water depths of up to 2,000 meters. Transmitted data is displayed graphically and logged topsides on the PC. Halliburton first worked with this method during pre-commissioning activities offshore Brazil in 1996. Pipelines in water depths of more than 350 meters were proving to be extremely difficult to monitor and strong currents kept loosening the piggybacked instrument hose, leading to extensive delays during deployment and recovery.
