An operating company and a supplier have worked together to craft a solution to the challenge facing many gas transmission companies in establishing a corporate protocol for providing independent third-party verification of the company's gas meters ╚D orifice, turbine, positive displacement, sonic, ultrasonic, and critical flow provcrs, (Figure 1). Several years ago, this was one of the challenges facing Jon Kinney, a measurement manager at Dominion Transmission (then CNG Transmission). The accuracy of the results being reported by the flow computers for the orifice and turbine meters used by the company needed to be validated using a reliable standard. Since the company's custody transfer meters were governed by different contracts, base conditions could vary for different calculations, which needed to be accounted for in a straightforward fashion. Also, an automated method was needed for correcting invalid results (due to faulty instrumentation, for example) and making corresponding adjustments to customer billing.
