A recent field demonstration in western Alberta established the practicality of installing large-diameter, high-pressure composite reinforced line pipe (CRLP~(TM)) on a commercial scale. NCF Industries, Inc., TransCanada Pipe Line Co. and CRC-Evans Pipeline International report they have successfully joined seven joints of a 40-foot-long, 48-inch OD CRLP on the 15-mile Saratoga section of the Western Alberta system mainline expansion. A major benefit from implementing CRLP technology would be to enable builders to use pipe manufactured and milled in North America to build a pipeline from Alaska or northern Canada to North American population centers. That is, it would allow the use of regionally produced, large-diameter X-70 pipe without negatively impacting the pipeline load capacity.
