Every time Danny Davis saw a pipelayer on a job site he felt like he was stepping back in time. For more than 70 years the sideboom pipelayer, first produced in the 1930s, remained basically unchanged. While he never gave much thought to coming up with a new design, that's just what happened. As a 25-year-veteran of pipeline and oilfield construction, Davis had worked around pipelayers on major projects from Mexico to Papua New Guinea. He also spent time aboard offshore oil platforms and barges, running large crawler cranes and making critical lifts. For most of those years, Davis never thought he would be the one to design an innovative, multi-functional machine to supplant the earlier sideboom pipelayer. But that's exactly what happened.
