On June 26, 1996, Colonial Pipeline experienced a watershed event that changed the direction of this Atlanta-based company. A 1 million gallon spill of diesel fuel into South Carolina's Reedy River. The event delivered a powerful message to Colonial and to the nation's pipeline industry about corporate accountability and public responsibility. Neither the company's immediate response nor the extensive remediation effort that followed would compare in magnitude to the changes that resulted at Colonial as a result of that rupture in Line 2. The events of that day changed the course of the nation's largest refined petroleum products pipeline and, quite possibly, the course of the pipeline industry. The 1996 Reedy River spill forced Colonial to take a long, hard look at its internal organization and to reconsider what it means to be a company that holds the public trust. Amid a change in the company's leadership, Colonial began to assess its identity, its reputation and what was required to safely operate a pipeline. This introspection also demanded that each employee, regardless of his or her position at Colonial, be committed to and willing to change. New operating standards were set and then raised - a regimen that continues today.
