Guided by customer reaction, ROSEN'S newest addition to the in-line inspection market is its Axial Flaw Detection (AFD) tool. The tool is available in a full range of diameters and is one of the shortest designs in the category. The AFD tool uses Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFD technology and applies it in the circumferential direction of the pipe (CMFL) to locate and characterize mainly longitudinally or axially oriented anomalies. Development work spanned 20 months and resulted in a technological solution for a specific pipeline operator's need to manage and maintain pipeline system integrity. This article seeks to give a better understanding of the need for in-line inspection (ILI) tools and technologies as well as the development process of complex ILI technologies. It will also emphasize the importance of the relationship between the pipeline system operator and the ILI service provider in understanding the requirements for such solutions.
