The founder and chairman of one of the world's most closely watched companies says that despite the many ventures Enron Corp. has become involved in during recent years, at heart it is still an energy company. Speaking at the annual Dain Rauscher Wessels Energy 2000 Conference on Sept. 19, Kenneth Lay acknowledged that the company he founded 15 years ago through a merger of natural gas pipelines has far exceeded its original scope, although energy in one form or another is still its core product. Indeed, Lay was quite content to discuss the growth of Enron's energy business, particularly transportation of natural gas and electrical distribution as well as its burgeoning wholesale and retail energy markets.
