Higher energy prices played a major role in helping the P&GJ Energy Index to continue moving up from the beginning of the year to the end of the third quarter. Latest analysis shows the index up to 140 at the end of the third quarter after going up to 120 and 102 at the end of the second and first quarters, respectively. The higher energy prices currently seen in the U.S. are a result of the believed low supplies of natural gas and fuel oil for the coming winter months, tension in the Middle East and its possible impact on crude oil supplies, and potential problems from shortages of natural gas affecting electric generation.
