There has been a dramatic change in the hiring of pilots by all businesses with flight operations. At one time, a prospective hire needed an ATP with extensive qualifying time in multi-engines and turbine-powered aircraft. The military was the main source for most professional pilot positions. But times are changing, and army flying divisions are training a much smaller number of service pilots. Why? Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are logging unprecedented hours performing duties once flown by human-piloted aircraft. These new military drones are controlled from an installation many thousands of miles away by both former pilots and technicians. This trend is going to continue and even grow in intensity to keep both costs and fatalities to a minimum. The result will be fewer numbers of service pilots seeking civilian flying positions.
