It was a long way to go for a margarita (no salt), but it was worth it. A few weeks ago, fellow pilot Chelsea Welch and I flew two Cirrus SR22-G3s south of the border to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on the southern tip of Baja California, for a weekend of sun, surf and salsa. On the morning of our departure, with about 1,000 miles of airway before us, we were planning an early wheels-up from Palo Alto, near San Francisco, a quick turnrnat Brown Field in San Diego to file and fuel, and a nonstop dash to San Jose del Cabo, our conveniently located airport of entry. If all went according to plan, we'd beat the 5:00 p.m. deadline to clear customs and be hanging 10 by mid-afternoon. Of course, that was not to be. What do they say? The airway to Baja is paved with good intentions?
