摘要

One of the most recognizable trends in recent literature on Tokyo is a tendency towards research from different fields of urban and architectural studies that concentrates on a micro scale of observation. A city such as Tokyo, which used to be associated with hyperbolic definitions such as 'urban giant' or 'paradox-thick megalopolis',1 and which is still the centre of the largest metropolitan area in the world, is increasingly observed from a different end of the spectrum. A growing number of works explore the idea that some of the most specific and characterizing traits of Tokyo's built landscape are not to be found in the city's broad patterns of change but in some of its smaller and apparently less visible details.2 Jordan Sand's study of the emergence of the 'vernacular' in Tokyo's urban culture from the 1960s can be seen as one of the most extensively researched and intellectually challenging attempts to show the potential of a microscopic approach to the history of the city.
