The plans for Greater Berlin in 1910 and Daniel Burnham's Plan of Chicago of 1909 are among the most outstanding examples of 'big plans' devised for cities around the globe in the early twentieth century. These plans not only covered a larger area than the previous attempts to manage the growth of cities, but were also more complex in that they included aspects of an integrated urban development. The conference held by the Section for Planning History of the German Society for Urban History and Urban Research (GSU) at the Center for Metropolitan Studies/TU Berlin in cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Regional Development and Structural Planning (IRS) Erkner set out to draw together case studies and perspectives on this specific mode of planning that evolved just before the First World War. An attempt was made not only to reconstruct the historical context and significance of such plans but also, following the interdisciplinary set-up of the conference, to evaluate an alleged renaissance of 'big plans' over the last couple of years.
