Manufacturing 17,000 Olympic torches for the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta, GA, was a monumental task for U.S. manufacturers, including a number of metal finishers. The torches were produced under the supervision of American Meter Company of Erie, PA, a firm that primarily manufactures gas metering equipment. According to Tony Jankowski, senior buyer and project coordinator for American Meter, the company became interested in the project through a sister company in Germany. "They were involved in the past with making the torches, so we felt it was a way that we could contribute because the summer games are being hosted by the U.S. this year."
