An 884-MW coal-fired unit jointly owned by Xcel Energy nand the Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency will be out nof service for at least six months following a November fire, Xcel nsaid in a report to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. n“The failure at Sherco-3 [near Becker, Minnesota] resulted in fires nin both the turbine and generator, and caused damage to the ngenerator, exciter and some turbine components,” Xcel said. The nplant’s boiler and pollution control equipment were unaffected. nAn investigation is ongoing. Xcel expects most of the damage to nbe covered by insurance. “We currently do not see any issue in nobtaining replacement power due to adequate reserve margins non our system as well as excess capacity within the Midwest n[Independent Transmission System Operator] footprint,” Xcel nsaid. Xcel owns 59% of the unit and SMMPA owns 41%. The plant nproduced 6.1 million MWh in 2009 and accounts for about 85% nof SMMPA’s energy needs, according to the public power agency. nLike Minneapolis-based Xcel, SMMPA believes it will be able to nget all its replacement power needs from the wholesale market, nspokesman Dan Hays said
