While it may seem far-fetched to some, Pacific Gas andnElectric this week said it has signed what it calls a first-of-a-kindnpower purchase agreement with Solaren Corp. for 200 MW ofnsolar power from satellites in space.nManhattan Beach, California-based Solaren has used orbitingnsatellites to transmit various data for 45 years, but the deal withnPG&E marks the first time the company would generate powernusing solar panels in Earth orbit. Energy from the satellitesnwould be sent to a receiving station in Fresno, California, wherenit would be converted to electricity.nSolar panels in space can receive up to 10 times as muchnsolar energy as Earth-based panels, said PG&E spokesmannJonathan Marshall.
