New Jersey regulators last week unanimously approved a Public Service Electric & Gas program to help customers install about 30 MW of solar power. Under the program, PSE&G is to offer $105 million in loans to finance up to 60% of the cost to install solar projects. "Now that the board has approved our proposal we will move as quickly as possible to begin offering solar loans to developers and customers," Ralph LaRossa, PSE&G president and chief operating officer, said in a press release. The program implements an agreement among the Board of Public Utilities staff, New Jersey Rate Counsel, PSE&G and other stakeholders, the BPU said. "This showcases what we can accomplish when stakeholders in this state work collectively to come up with true innovation," BPU President Jeanne Fox said. The loans are to support development of 30 MW of solar power, which would fulfill about 50% of the state's renewable portfolio standard in PSE&G's service area. The RPS requires that 20% of the state's energy needs be met with renewable energy by 2020. Customers would pay back the loan by receiving solar renewable energy credits and turning them over to the utility. PSE&G customers would pay the cost of the solar program through a rate surcharge, offset somewhat by proceeds from the sale of the RECs.
