Consolidated Edison's net income soared 258.4% to a second-quarter record $552 million - but most ($406 million after tax) came from the gain on power plant sales by Con Edison Development. Development sold five plants totaling 1,706 MW to North American Energy Alliance for total cash proceeds of $1,075 billion. And, Development and the other two "competitive energy" units saw $30 million of "mark-to-market" gains, up from $2 million in 2007 (both after tax), the company reported August 7. Without those, net from continuing operations would have been down $34 million or 23% to $114 million, mainly on an $8 million net loss at the competitive units, down from 2007 profits of $16 million.
