Smart grid technology firm Ambient has received $8 million in funding from Vicis Capital Master Fund and the investor group will hold a controlling interest in Ambient, which has seen some challenges in the past 10 years. The evolution of the smart grid is taking place at different levels and with differing amounts of enthusiasm on the part of utilities, and perhaps no other firm has experienced the ups and downs over the years as Ambient, which became a publicly traded company in 1998. After receiving the Vicis funding last week, Ambient said that after Vicis exercises stock warrants it would hold about 65% of the outstanding shares of common stock in Ambient. The smart grid company's primary challenge has been the use of multiple communication technologies by utilities over the years, and Ambient has recognized that there will not be one type of communication gear used by utilities, President and CEO John Joyce said in an interview.
