The board of the PJM Interconnection has approved $1.6 billion in transmission system improvements, including a 500-kV "backbone" project in northern New Jersey, the grid operator said last week. The various upgrades, part of PJM's Regional Transmission Expansion Plan, are required for reliability, the organization said. The 500-kV line in New Jersey, a Public Service Electric & Gas project, will run from the Branchburg substation in Somerset County in the north-central part of the state to the Roseland substation in Essex County and then to the Hudson substation in Hudson County. The Roseland and Hudson substations are within the densely populated northeastern area that includes Newark and Jersey City. PJM said it also approved a change in the previously approved plan for the Mid-Atlantic Power Pathway project, a $1 billion Pepco Holdings project. The change will use a high-voltage direct-current link to run under the Chesapeake Bay from Calvert Cliffs in Maryland to substations on the Delmarva Peninsula. The 500-kV project had been planned with entirely alternating-current segments.
