Santee Cooper last week reconfirmed a three-pronged strategy to meet future energy needs that includes the continued pursuit of a 600-MW coal-fired power project near Kingsburg in Florence County, South Carolina. More renewable energy and conservation and building baseload nuclear power are the other parts of the state-owned energy company's updated generation plan unveiled July 1. The plan was released just a couple of days after Santee Cooper's board of directors authorized the Moncks Corner-based utility to contract with an independent power producer to buy about SO MW of biomass power. Although no timetable for the acquisition was disclosed, officials said they are in discussions with several potential producers who were not identified. Lonnie Carter, Santee Cooper president and CEO, said "the good news is that our aggressive efficiency and conservation efforts will save us the equivalent of roughly two large generating units by 2020. The bad news is that if we don't build baseload generation now, we will still be 1,150 MW short of capacity by 2020."
