Wisconsin regulators have approved a 345-kV power line between Wisconsin and Illinois in an effort to help reduce power costs for the state's utilities. The unanimous Wisconsin Public Service Commission decision marks the first time it has considered a transmission project based on economic reasons rather than reliability reasons, said Chairman Eric Callisto. Over time, the project will likely have reliability benefits as well, PSC Commissioner Mark Meyer said. The line would run about 35 miles from the Paddock substation on the Illinois border to the Rockdale substation near Madison, Wisconsin. American Transmission Company, a utility-owned company based in Waukesha, Wisconsin, expects to start building the $132.7 million project in late 2008 and bring it online in 2010. The project was supported by all of Wisconsin's investor-owned utilities and Wisconsin Public Power. There were no opponents to the project.
