No one can read President-elect Barack Obama's mind, but a book of recommendations authored in part by his transition team advisers may be as close as Washington can get, and their advice portends a revolution in how energy is produced and consumed. On Inauguration Day, the authors advise, Obama should form a National Energy Council composed of Cabinet members and "led by a national energy adviser with stature comparable to the national security adviser and the national economic adviser." The central themes of the book, portions of which were released last week by the Center for American Progress Fund, are curbing climate change and advancing renewable energy, and credibly communicating these priorities to the American people. The liberal think tank, chaired by Obama transition chief John Podesta, urges the president-elect to aggressively link energy use and global climate change in nearly all facets of domestic and international energy policy, rolling back many Bush administration initiatives in the process.
