Black Hills, in the throes of meshing five utilities acquired from Aquila into its operations and flush from the July sale of seven independent power plants for $840 million, told analysts last week it plans to invest $800 million through 2011 on generation and transmission in seven states from Montana to Kansas, "We are in excellent financial shape and utilities have predictable cash flows and earnings," David Emery, chairman, president and CEO of the Rapid City, South Dakota-based company said during a conference call. Black Hills had a $3.87-$3.92/share, or $756 million, net gain on sale of the seven plants, he said. Setting the table for reporting third-quarter earnings results in November, the company wanted analysts to understand its strategy since expansion with the Aquila assets and the plant sale and its strategy for the future. The company also is eying acquisition of rural utilities, because it says it has expertise in this area and understands small utilities.
