Florida Power & Light plans to add 6,600 MW of generating capacity - including 3,650 MW in combined-cycle projects approved by state regulators last week - over the next six years despite a sharp slowdown in its customer-growth rate, the CFO of FP&L's corporate parent said at a Wall Street conference last Wednesday. It may seen counterintuitive for FP&L to be adding so much new capacity when the rate of customer growth has slowed to 21,000/year from 95,000/year a year ago, FPL Group CFO Armando Pimentel said during a presentation at Lehman Brothers' CEO Energy/Power Conference in New York City. He explained that in every case, except for 110 MW of solar capacity FP&L is planning, the new capacity would reduce customer costs in the long run.
