Power industry profits were higher in the third quarter than a year before, but the gain was not as strong as the bottom line shows. Reported net income for the 76 entities on the accompanying chart by Standard & Poor's Investment Services was $18.63 billion — a 72.7% jump from third-quarter 2006 (see chart, page 18). Almost half of the $7.74 billion increase, however, was at generator Calpine, where net skyrocketed from $2 million to $3.79 billion (EUW, 12 Nov, 26).
