The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is carrying out a two part reorganization, creating a new Office of Electric Reliability and establishing an energy innovations unit within what is now the Office of Energy Market Regulation. A few years ago, FERC formed a division of reliability within the Office of Energy Markets and Reliability. Separating reliability matters into its own office shows the increasing importance reliability is taking in energy markets and the commission's mission following the Energy Policy Act of 2005, Chairman Joseph Kelliher said. The energy innovation unit, within the renamed energy markets office, will cover missions involving demand response, distributed generation, renewable energy, global warming and advanced technologies. "The commission has been addressing the needs of demand response and renewable energy in our policy decisions, and this new unit reflects that these issues will be increasingly important as energy markets continue to evolve," Kelliher said.
