With high oil prices pointing to the end — or at least sharp cutbacks — in synthetic fuels tax credits this year, Progress Energy last week booked a $54 million (after tax) charge against second-quarter earnings to write off the entire asset carrying value of its synfuels manufacturing facilities, as well as part of the value of the river terminals at which the synfuels manufacturing facilities are located.
