Power dealmakers had better respect state regulators, was the virtually unanimous conclusion among panelists at the 3d Annual Platts Utility M&A Conference last week. Panelists focused on Exelon's attempt to acquire Public Service Enterprise Group held up in New Jersey, and Maryland politicians involvement in the FPL Group/Constellation Energy Group deal. "With locally focused regulators, often corporations are seen as the property of the people, not shareholders. This is not something that will be overcome in the near future," warned Jonathan Thayer, CEG's managing director, corporate strategy and development.
