Poland’s largest utility PGE said it synchronized the first of two 900 MW hard coal-fired units at its Opole plant with the grid January 15. PGE said the synchronization followed the successful boiler pressure test and first firing of unit 5 at the plant in southwest Poland. The unit will be commissioned by June 15, the company said, almost one year behind schedule. The second 900 MW unit 6 is scheduled to be commissioned by September 30. The two units are being built by a consortium of Rafako, Polimex-Mostostal, Mostostal Warszawa and GE Power, the latter being the general designer of the Zloty 11.6 billion ($3.08 billion) investment, the largest ever in the Polish power sector. The two units will supply 8% of Poland’s current electricity demand and consume 4 million mt/year of coal, supplied by the state coal miner PGG. Once completed the investment will more than double Opole’s capacity from 1,492 MW to 3,332 MW.
