UK battery storage developer Eelpower wants to add 200 MW of capacity this year despite headwinds in capacity market and embedded benefit revenue. The company remains convinced grid-connected standalone batteries will come good as the UK adds wind and market volatility rises. “Look at the step-up in negative pricing, with 108 half-hour periods in 2018 versus 65 in 2017,” company CEO Mark Simon told S&P Global Platts January 23. In addition, “we don’t think the fall in prices for ancillary services over the long term is going to be as sharp as some believe,” he said. While Eelpower’s current battery projects are assumed to be of one hour duration, the company is considering doubling this to “open more doors” in the wholesale market, Simon said. Closest to construction are projects in Winchester (10 MW) and Stagstone (8 MW) and three more sites in Yorkshire totalling 16 MW. Extending to two-hour duration would support the business case, in terms of future capacity market earnings and arbitrage opportunities in wholesale markets – “basically two hours allows you to trade more frequently within warranty conditions,” Simon said.
