Belgian imports of electricity soared in 2018 as domestic nuclear generation slumped, grid operator Elia said January 18. Net imports increased 168% to 17.4 TWh, with peak hourly imports posting a record 5,234 MW in December. Imports’ share in the Belgian supply mix tripled to 22% while nuclear’s fell to 34% from 50%, the TSO said. Unprecedented reactor outages during the second half of 2018 were offset by imports from France and the Netherlands. Gas plant output was flat at 21.3 TWh, covering 27% of demand, even though demand spiked up in November when 43% of electricity came from gas-fired generation. “We can see a strong correlation between gas-fired power plants and nuclear power. Gas-fired power plants often serve as buffers filling gaps in nuclear generation,” the grid operator said. solar and wind generation combined was up 18% on year to 9.8 TWh, with new records set during the year by both technologies.
