Statkraft has signed a 10-year power purchase agreement with Iberian industrial consumer group Fortia for a total 3 TWh of electricity mainly from wind and solar projects under construction, the Norwegian utility said January 21. Fortia is formed of 20 energy-intensive users from the steel, cement, metals, chemicals, paper and industrial gas sectors. It sources energy for over 100 sites in Spain and Portugal. The PPA with Statkraft contributed to renewable energy deployment in Spain “while ensuring long-term supply for the energy intensive industry at competitive and predictable prices,” Fortia Managing Director Juan Temboury said. Statkraft has now closed several PPAs in the Spanish market both for fully merchant renewable energy projects and for projects granted permission in competitive auctions. In April last year it signed a 15-year PPA with project developer BayWa supporting construction of the 170-MW Don Rodrigo solar plant south of Seville. Output from the merchant plant is to be marketed by Statkraft to commercial users and through the wholesale market. In March, developer Cox Energy Solar signed a long-term PPA with energy trader Audax Energia for a total 660 MW of solar PV capacity to be developed in Spain and Portugal.
