After a turbulent week in the northwest European power markets, with day ahead prices rising to winter highs on cold, low-wind conditions, the near outlook has turned more benign. Although temperatures are set to remain below norms, forecasts for the next fortnight into February have turned milder, triggering a slide in power, fuels and CO2 pricing January 25. Things looked very different two days earlier when German, French, Dutch and Belgian DA base prices rose above €85/MWh, with Spain the outlier some €25/MWh cheaper than France. A number of events stirred intraday volatility. Dutch imbalance prices rose above €700/MWh after an outage at RWE’s 750-MW Eemshaven coal-fired power station, prompting Dutch TSO Tennet to declare an emergency event, traders and analysts said. Dutch prices had been high all week with exports on the UK-NL Britned link rising as high as 730 MW. Natural gas demand for power generation in the UK meanwhile set a new record January 23, as post-day metered CCGT offtake from the gas system exceeded all previous allocations at a staggering 97 million cu m.
