Polish utilities Energa and Enea suspended financing of the 1 GW coalplant project on February 13 pending new analysis of its viability.Energa gave contractors GE Power and Alstom Power Systems noticeto proceed in December 2018.Since then, however, the utilities have struggled to attract finance,forcing suspension of plant and railway infrastructure construction.Discouraging developments included the European InvestmentBank’s new lending policy, focused exclusively on low or zero carbontechnology, and the European Commission’s Green Deal, aiming toreach a climate-neutral Europe by 2050. Furthermore, in Decemberrefiner PKN Orlen made an offer for 100% of Energa’s shares. It isopposed to coal-fired generation and has said it would convert theproject to gas.
