Germany’s biggest power generator RWE sees a financial loss of Eur3.5billion from lignite mine and power plant closures agreed with thegovernment, only partially offset by Eur2.6 billion in compensation tobe paid over the next 15 years, it said January 16.Closing mines earlier than planned would leave more than half ofRWE’s permitted lignite reserves of 2.1 million mt in the ground, CEOManfred Schmitz said.“We went to the limits of what was possible, but that is the price topay to allow for the implementation of the coal commissions’recommendations,” Schmitz said.
