European spot coal prices continue to tumble. On January 23 S&PGlobal Platts assessed the CIF ARA 6,000 kcal/kg NAR physical price at$47.40/mt, down from $52.25/mt on January 9. Weak gas prices havereduced demand for thermal coal in European markets, with the coalto-gas switching seen last year driving through into 2020 on the backof milder than normal temperatures, keeping gas storage at abundantlevels. The shift towards greater gas use and away from coal has alsobeen driven by a comparatively sharper fall in European gas prices overthe past few months. Coal stocks remained extremely high on week atDutch terminals EMO Rotterdam, OBA Amsterdam and OVETVlissingen, measuring 6.13 million mt, down a mere 0.33% on weekand 2.08% on year. Sources anticipate limited movement over thecoming months as gas prices are predicted to remain low theforeseeable future. On January 23 spot CIF ARA coal bids and offerswere heard for March delivery at $47.10/mt and $47.90/mt.
