Greek electricity demand fell 9% in May in a year on year comparison, a modest improvement on the 13% on-year decline recorded in April, when a COVID-19 lockdown was in place, according to data from the Energy Exchange Group. On April 28, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a relaxation of lockdown measures over the coming weeks, with schools, shops and cafes reopening through May, travel to the islands eased May 25 and hotels reopening from June 15. Year-to-date demand was down 7% to 19.4 TWh, reducing the need for imports (down 11% YTD and 34% in May) while leaving domestic gasfiring completely unscathed. Lignite generation took the brunt of the demand decline again (down 87% in May), reduced to a bit-part player in Greek generation having been the leading source two years ago.
