Austria’s OMV will build the country’s largest hydrogen plant at its 192,000 b/d Schwechat refinery outside Vienna, fueling it with renewable power to replace existing fossil-fuel based hydrogen at the site, it said Feb. 15. The PEM electrolyzer is to start operating in the second half of 2023 with an investment of Eur25 million ($30 million) jointly financed by OMV and Kommunalkredit Austria AG, it said. “By building Austria’s largest electrolysis plant in the OMV Schwechat Refinery, we are making another contribution to reducing CO_2 and to meeting climate targets, whereby hydrogen is a key technology,” OMV COO downstream Thomas Gangl said.
